Option One:
- Go up to your nearest bookstore employee.
- Ask them to order you a copy. Leave your phone number. They will call when it comes in.
- Wait a few days. Then go back and pick up Tap & Gown.
Option Two:
- If you have a credit card, visit your favorite online retailer: Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Borders.com, or Indie Bound and order yourself a copy.
- Wait a few days. Enjoy Tap & Gown delivered to your door.
Option Three:
- Visit your local library. Ask them to get you a copy of Tap & Gown.
- Wait a few days.
I know all of these options come with the unpleasant side effect of waiting a few days, but it is much much better than the alternative which is:
Do Not Do This:
- “I am unable to find Tap & Gown in my local bookstore. I think I will leave the bookstore without saying anything to anyone and hope that they will randomly and without prompting order Tap & Gown in the next week or so.”
- Return in a week or so to find that they STILL do not have a copy of Tap & Gown.
Bookstores will order you a copy of whatever book you want, if it’s in print and available from their distributor. Tap & Gown, being published by Random House, is both. Here’s some info that will help them find the book for ordering purposes:

That’s hilarious, Diana.
I, too, get emails from people saying they couldn’t find my book in x bookshop. While I’m thrilled they’re keen to get hold of my books I am puzzled that it never seems to occur to them that they could order it. Though I do understand about instant gratification!

And it’s probably a good idea to ask POLITELY when you ask at your bookstore or library. Threats of bodily injury are usually not very well received, and may even be misinterpreted.

OR…you could buy yourself a Kindle and have the book in ten seconds.

PR: polite, schmite. I say grab ‘em by the throat and give ‘em hell!
Or, ask politely. Then say thank you. That works too.
Julie: And sell our souls to Amazon? No thank you!

My soul is already theirs. Anyone who can deliver books to my Kindle in ten seconds or to my door in two days wins.
