Today, Secret Society Girl is out in paperback for the low-low price of $10. ($8 on Amazon). Snazzy new cover, oodles of review quotes, and the first chapter of the upcoming Under the Rose thrown in for free. It doesn’t get much cooler than that.
In honor of this momentous event, I am giving away one copy of Secret Society Girl, the paperback, on this blog every week until the release of Under the Rose (June 26th).
Also in honor of the paperback’s release, Amy Haskel herself has been induced to share the secret recipe for her society’s official drink, the 312:
THE 312
1.5 oz. pomegranate juice (or pomegranate-blueberry, for an even deeper red)
1.5 oz. pomegranate-infused vodka (Amy likes Pearl Persephone)
1.5 oz. pomegranate schnapps
.5 oz. lemon juice (or sour mix)
1 oz. honey syrup, or to taste (honey syrup is made from two parts honey, one part water, heated to dissolve, then cooled — same as simple syrup)
Shake ingredients in a martini mixer, strain into glass. Garnish with lemon twist, if desired. Don’t have too many; you have to keep on your toes in the depths of the tomb.
And for those who skipped a grade and got tapped before hitting 21:
THE VIRGIN 312
2 oz. pomegranate juice (or pomegranate blueberry)
2 oz. sparkling water (or ginger ale)
1.5 oz cranberry cocktail
.5 oz lemon juice
dash of honey
Optional: splash of OJ
Shake with ice, strain into glass.
Update: An eagle-eyed reader noted to me that one should NOT shake items with seltzer in them. Good point. So, uh, stir gently with ice, strain into glass?
Keep an eye out for stray society members looking for an easy sacrifice.
The best way to enjoy either of these drinks is kicked back with a copy of Secret Society Girl in paperback. Enjoy!

Silly me. I never thought to ask you for the recipe, butI’ve been wanting to try one since I read the book. So, thank you for sharing.

Hurrah for the paperback release! I love the taste of pomegranate and the drinds sound great.

Don’t you just love pomegrante, and I have a little sister at Princeton who really needs a copy of your book.
May 1st, 2007 at 10:44 am
Congratulations on the paperback, D! More of you out in the stores for people to find. Ex-cellent.
May 1st, 2007 at 12:56 pm
Am worried about the price of the paperback…sounds too low for adequate royalties to keep you and SB in the style to which you wish to become accustomed. On the other hand, maybe more people will buy it because it’s the only book in the store under $15, and thus your fan base will grow.
Off to the store for more pomegranate juice….

So happy the paperback is finally out in stores!! And thank you for the drink recipes! Can’t wait to make them!

I know it’s been said before, but you can never hear it too much.
Congratulations!

Hey, Diana — any chance you’re doing a book signing in FL this month? If not, I’m off to store later tonight to get a copy — need to complete my amazing collection of autographed first edition Secret Society Girl books — the ARC, the hardback, and now the paperback . . . still waiting for the book on tape version! And did I mention before that UNDER THE ROSE is absolutely awesome!
May 1st, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Paperback, woo hoo!
And on an unrelated note, you’re right, Heroes is really good. I’m on ep 11 or so now, but I still don’t like the first ep.

Those sound delicious. Mmmm…
I actually snagged my paperback copy of SSG on Sunday, because bookstores like to put things out the day they get them (unless you’re Harry Potter). Halfway in and loving it!

WTG Diana! I have to check this out at Borders on my way home!

Yay! The drink secret is out! (Those are my favorite types of secrets.) Is there really pomegranate schnapps, or are you testing our bar savvy?
Well, I’m off to Google “pomegranate schnapps” to find out for myself.
May 1st, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Yes, there really is pomegranate schnapps but if you don’t have it, you could probably leave it out of the drink entirely and just increase the proportions of pomegranate juice and vodka.
Also, I’ve heard both citron flavored and currant flavored (such as Absolut Kurrant) vodkas work well in a pinch.
Thanks for the well wishes, guys! I’m off to the bookstore soon to see if they have it and to pick up some other great new releases (like Jennifer Estep’s Karma Girl and Shanna Swendson’s Damsel in De-Stress).
May 1st, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Phyllis, I haven’t planned on a booksigning and I don’t think TARA has either, but I will be down in FL the second week in May. perhaps I should have planned something like that!
May 1st, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Oooh, gonna hafta add a few items to the ol’ grocery list… =)
May 1st, 2007 at 9:06 pm
Diana, you need to arrange a signing when you’re down here for anyone who needs the paperback!
I’d think taking out the schnapps might make it less sweet…you might want to replace with grenadine…though to taste. Some people (like me) would like it very sweet while others won’t.
May 1st, 2007 at 9:09 pm
On an interesting side note…I just figured out, after googling Grenadine to make sure I spelled it right…how Max and the Baroness managed to have pink lemonade in Sound of Music. I had no idea how people MADE pink lemonade except with food coloring or from a mix. It’s grenadine that adds the color! Learn something new every day.
I’m such a foodie dweeb.
May 1st, 2007 at 9:22 pm
Pomegranate schnapps is actually VERY tart — like cranberry juice.
And you can always add more honey.
The 312 is an incredibly tart drink, as described in the POW WOW chapter of SSG.
It is possible that they used grenadine for pink lemonade, but probably more likely that they used strawberries or some other sort of berry. that’s what we always used when making fresh lemonade growing up.

Hey ! I have never read the book, but it sounds great from the summary and reviews. May i recieve a free copy?
thank you!

I had a hard time finding SSG in the store - I had no idea where it was shelved, and it wasn’t anywhere that I thought it would be. I actually had to ask the guy at the counter for help. *facepalm*
But I finally got it, and stayed up waaaaay past my usual bedtime to read it. Completely unputdownable! Can’t wait to read the sequel.
Congrats on a great book!

Laura, where was it and where did you expect it to be? Also, what bookstore? Borders is supposed to have me on front tables right now but B&N doesn’t start until next week.
Thanks so much for reading!
May 3rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Ahh… ‘Twas a B&N. I expected it to be on the tables out front already, with the new paperbacks and summer reads and such.
The excerpt on your website sounded like chick lit/YA, so I looked all around where I expected those sorts of books to be, but didn’t see it. It turned out to be in general fiction. Which still has me stymied.
