LOL at the comment about S&S sounding like a secret society.

OK, so I broke my promise to myself and started reading UNDER THE ROSE last night. Yup...superglue is totally coating the spine of the book...

Hi, Diana,

You were right about my "fear of flying" being overblown (alas, we're talking the real thing here, not the Erica Jong version). Despite my being honored with the full-court-press version of the JFK security search (the metal clip on my plastic pen kept setting off the alarm), and the plane being held at the gate for almost an hour, we got into Portland, OR half an hour early. The only bummer was I forgot to reclaim my pen, and was thus unable to write during the 5 hr. 15 min. flight. Talk about going into writer's withdrawal! :-(

"Pause for squealing. Guess those printers listened to the instructions about the Superglue coating after all, huh?"

You are such a card. Thanks for helping to cure my jet lag with a good belly laugh!

I trust you will share the full review with us all at the earliest opportunity? (Yeah, I guess that qualifies as a rhetorical question, but I just had to ask it anyhow.)

I've already told you that I started reading UTR at bedtime one night and didn't get to sleep until 3 a.m. - I simply *had* to find out what happened next. And no, my ARC did not have the Superglue coating. It didn't need it!

I've always thought of "S&S" as the least-successful of Austen's books. Can we move on to "Emma"?

P.S. Greetings from sunny (really!) Portland, OR!

I haven't seen the movie before. I want to now! I ordered it from my library and can't wait to see the extras. Emma Thompson is quite a woman of all trades. I love that. :)

I read the latest Big Biography on Jane Austen a few years ago, and if I remember correctly (ha!) she fell in love with a man who couldn't marry her because of financial circumstances.

So maybe that's why she's so sympathetic? I can't remember the book so well.

I haven't read the book since I was a teen. I suppose I should pick it up again.

I have seen the movie so many times and loved it each time. I even saw it in a movie theatre in London with eatrawfish not long after it came out. *That* was fun. :) But you know, I don't think I've ever listened to the commentary with Emma Thompson. How did I miss that?

I haven't read the book in years...shall I break my vow to never read another classic again and re-read this? After the deadline, perhaps. I was hoping to keep to it until my daughter started high school. ::sigh::

But reading your analysis, I wonder if this isn't simply one more case of a woman (Austen/Elinor) being harder on another woman than they would be on a man who exhibited the same behavior?
